1cuphalf and half, or more milk
1/2tspsalt, more or less, to taste
1/4tsppepper, more or less, to taste
1.5cupsshredded cheddar cheese
1.5cupsoyster crackers, or crackers of choice *SEE NOTES BELOW
1/2cupgrated parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil, add the broccoli florets and cook for 10 minutes - or until fork tender.
Place a large, nonstick pan over medium-high heat. Add the butter to melt. Once melted, add the flour and stir to fully combine.
Mix in milk and half and half. Whisk continuously for 2-3 minutes until thoroughly combined and no clumps remain.
Season with salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Whisk to combine.
Fold in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and stir until the cheese has fully melted and the sauce has thickened. Remove from heat.
Strain the broccoli and return it to the same pot. Pour cheese sauce over top and toss to coat.
Pour into the prepared casserole dish and smooth out with the back of a spoon. Add the cubed ham in a layer and top with the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
In a medium bowl, combine crushed crackers, melted butter, and parmesan cheese. Sprinkle cracker topping over the casserole.
Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the topping is a deep golden and crispy.
OYSTER CRACKERS: You can sub this with an equivalent amount of crushed saltine crackers, butter crackers, or even breadcrumbs.
